Ultimate Shutter's window coverings help you conserve power every year you live in your home. We don't just keep the summer heat out but help keep your winter heat in. Installing window roller shutters is ideally the vital first step to making your home more energy efficient and helping to save energy. View our Smart Buyer Facts to learn more about this.

How does this work?

The sun generates short wave solar radiation rays that penetrate normal window glass relatively easily, and are absorbed by the surfaces in the room and then emitted again in the form of heat radiation.

Heat radiation is in turn absorbed by the window glazing or reflected back into the interior of the room, creating a heat trap!

Like it does in Earth's atmosphere, the windows of your home can create a greenhouse-like reaction causing your home to overheat in certain rooms. 1024px-earths_greenhouse_effect_us_epa_2012

Windows, and the gaps around, them are notorious for passing temperature through them. In summer, windows do little to keep you cool and in winter they do even less to keep you warm. While double-glazed windows are a huge help in energy savings, they're expensive and can cost upwards of $15-25,000 to cover your home and sliding doors (there's not much use covering a window in the same room as a huge sliding glass door is there?)

All three of our roller shutter products are excellent at keeping your winter heat and summer air con in. While the shutters themselves may get warm, the insulated core and two separate walls keep the majority of exterior temperature from getting in.

Yes, we have a foam filling inside the shutter that is designed to maximise your energy savings.

The answer is: it depends.

For maximum energy savings, yes you would want to cover every window, of course. But in most homes there are windows with a greater chance or habit of passing your energy through. If you have a sliding door and want to lock it down in the winter or you have a few older windows in your home that seem to "leak" the cold air in, cover those windows first and see how much difference the shutters make.

Computer modeling tests using the NatHERS (National Housing Energy Rating Software) have been carried out on a typical project home & typical residential units located in Sydney, Melbourne & Perth with Ultimate roller shutters fitted to the windows. NatHERS gives an estimation of heating & cooling loads on a given dwelling and results have shown the energy reductions and benefits of fitting our windows with energy-saving roller shutters.

Potential savings on heating & cooling are shown in the attached table for both homes and units.

Conclusions

The use of Ultimate Shutter window shutters in Sydney, Melbourne & Perth were shown to provide significant energy savings for heating and cooling, therefore reducing energy bills for consumers and also a reduction in greenhouse emissions. The window roller shutters provide an environmentally friendly & energy-saving cost-efficient solution to heat loss in winter and summer heat gain.

Note: Tests were carried out on a randomly chosen home design and also on residential unit plans provided by the University of New South Wales. It is assumed that thermal insulation would exist in the ceiling & walls of the house. The shutters would be closed in summer when high levels of sunlight were on the windows. The shutters would be open in winter to let the sunlight in and closed at night to keep the heat in. Results will vary depending on the orientation of the house, the type of construction and the position and size of the windows. Results will also vary depending on how the roller shutters are operated and the actual weather experienced.
