Bushfire Shutters For Fire Protection

Keep Your Home Safe With

Roller shutters are essential for protecting homes and businesses during bushfires. Glass windows are the first thing that break in the heat of fire, and our shutters go a long way towards preventing this. Our aluminum roller shutters are equipped with a strong BAL-40 rating, which represents the highest level of protection offered for regions situated outside the immediate flame zone of a bushfire.

Bush Fire Prone Area? We've got you covered!

If you live in an area prone to bushfires, it is imperative to take preventative measures to ensure ample protection against a bushfire. Our roller shutters boast the highly sought-after flame-zone rating. Our distinction as one of just two companies offering these elusive flame-zone rated shutters underscores our commitment to safety for existing homes and essential for meeting BAL rating compliance for new home construction.

The most vulnerable part of any home is the glass windows. Your standard window will only offer limited bushfire protection. You will only need to have a temperature of around 55-60ºC before it will break a pane of glass. The temperature inside your home is around 15-20º lower than the wind flash and this causes the glass (single or double glazed) to shatter and puts homes and businesses at risk of an ember attack.

Harsh Australian Fire Conditions

Bushfire season in Australia typically lasts from December through March and can be particularly severe in drought years. The 2015/2016 bushfire season was the most destructive since 2008/2009 and resulted in the loss of over 400 houses and 500 non-residential buildings.

The Australian Standard AS 3959 for construction of buildings in bushfire prone areas recommends a BAL-40 rating for window protection in areas of “very high risk” of bush fire. Manufactured from aluminium with a baked enamel coated paint finish, our bushfire rated roller shutters are injected with a polyurethane foam which acts as an insulator and suppressor for heat and cold. This therefore makes it unbelievably resistant to fire (no shutter is fully fireproof) as well as heat up to temperatures of 800º Celsius (BAL-40) before it breaks down.

Best Choice for Fire Protection

Roller shutters play a vital role in safeguarding homes and businesses during bushfires. These bushfire-rated roller shutters are crafted from high-quality aluminum, boasting a durable baked enamel-coated paint finish. What sets them apart is the incorporation of polyurethane foam, which serves both as an insulator and a heat suppressor. This unique feature grants these shutters remarkable resistance to fire, though it’s crucial to remember that no shutter can be considered entirely fireproof. In fact, they can endure temperatures of up to 800º Celsius (BAL-40) before showing any signs of breakdown.

We have the right answers for you!

Unless a bushfire surrounds and overwhelms your house, the hot, flying embers from the fire are the greatest danger. Embers can fly tens of kms away and often these flying embers are how a fire spreads well across roads and beyond other natural blockages. If your windows have blown out from the heat and a hot ember enters your home it can start a house fire even if the bushfire itself is 30 km or more away. CFS says that ember attack is the main cause of house loss in a bushfire and is preventable with roller shutters.

Our BAL FZ Shutter is a stainless steel shutter that offers a very high level of protection against bushfires. Steel fails at approximately 1500°C and doesn’t begin to lose structural integrity until 800°C. This BAL FZ shutter comes with CSRIO test for BAL FZ. Our aluminium shutter material is BAL-40 rated and should withstand all but the most extreme temperatures, as well, but our choice would be the Fortress for both maximum home security and bushfire protection.
